ROR INSIDER

ROR Comedy’s ultimate guide to karaoke in Osaka

“The only thing better than singing is more singing.”

Ella Fitzgerald

“If your lifeguard duties were as good as your singing, a lot of people would be drowning.”

Simon Cowell

Karaoke is as authentically Japanese as sushi and sumo, and no night out in Japan is truly complete without a spot of singing. ROR Comedy’s resident comedians offer some inside knowledge as they introduce their favorite karaoke bars in the city.

TOM LAW

Favourite karaoke number: Don’t Look Back in Anger (Oasis)

Recommended karaoke bar: Domus

Domus is a game of 2 halves; classy bar/restaurant downstairs, trashy karaoke upstairs. I’m more of an upstairs man myself. I love the Hawaii/California vibe (I’m a sucker for a good palm tree). The place has a brilliant atmosphere, and it's ideal for large groups to come and sing the night away.

RODNEY SMITH

Favourite karaoke number: Total Eclipse of the Heart (Bonnie Tyler)

Recommended karaoke bar: Kama Sutra

The famous erotic textbook is all about positions. Well, in my opinion the ever-saucy Karma Sutra bar occupies the position of number one when it comes to Osaka’s karaoke joints! The atmosphere is great, the song selection is huge, and it's also open until the wee small hours, so while other bars are closing Kama Sutra is just getting started!

MOMO TAKAMORI

Favourite karaoke number: Beginning (One OK Rock)

Recommended karaoke bar: Moonshine

Moonshine is all about fun. This tiny bar is a great place to unwind with a nice drink (try their signature “Moonshine” cocktail), a chat to the friendly bar staff and a sing song. It’s also a great place to meet locals, expats and fellow travellers. And best of all, it’s 1 minute from ROR Comedy Club!

EDD DAGGERS

Favourite karaoke number: A Whole New World (Aladdin)

Recommended karaoke bar: Jankara

Call me traditional, but I love me some old-school classic karaoke! Jankara is the typical Japanese karaoke experience. Private booths where you and your friends can sing as loudly (and badly) as you like. They also have drinks and food which you can order from a machine without having to take a break from Bohemian Rhapsody.

Unwind after a busy day of sightseeing with the ultimate nighttime entertainment: a comedy show at ROR Comedy Club followed by a session of power ballads. Heavenly fun. Although that doesn't mean you'll necessarily be singing like an angel...

“Music oft hath such a charm

To make bad good, and good provoke to harm.”

William Shakespeare
